9 Best Riding Lawn Mower For The Money

What is the Best Riding Lawn Mower for the Money?

Gone are the days of pushing a mower around a large plot of land. Sure, you can get away with it if you live in the suburbs and only have a little bit to do, but if you own a half-acre or more, mowing with an old push mower can be a torturous endeavor. If you have more than an acre, be prepared to spend a whole weekend or two trying to get that done. Riding lawn mowers make life so much simpler, freeing up time for all those other things that make life worth living. If you’re in the market for making your life easier, here is our list of the 9 best riding lawn mower for the money.

Riding Lawn Mower FAQs

1. What Is a Riding Lawn Mower?

It’s all in the name. Instead of pushing your old style lawn mower back and forth, you have a seat on which to plant yourself, along with a steering wheel, gas pedal, and transmission. You put the machine into gear, lower the mowing deck (where the blades that do the cutting are located), and you get to work! The best riding lawn mowers will give you the option of cutting grass high or short, cutting while moving or in reverse, and save you a ton of time and energy compared to traditional push mowers. If you own a half-acre or more of land, finding the best riding lawn mower for the money should definitely be on the to-do list.

2. What Are the Different Types of Riding Mowers?

There are three general types of riding lawn mowers.

  • Standard Lawn Mowers – These are exactly as described. They come with a wide range of mowing deck sizes and are used strictly for cutting grass. If you are looking for the least expensive options, then a standard lawn mower will be your best riding lawn more as there are no other capabilities built into these machines.
  • Lawn Tractors – Lawn tractors have more power and are able to do more than just cut grass. They can mulch leaves and small sticks, which means you have less clean up to do before mowing the lawn, and they can haul material around the yard for you if you need that versatility. Some mowers even have optional leaf-blowing or snow-blowing attachments to make keeping your lawn visible as easy as taking a ride. If these sound like features you would like to have, then a lawn tractor is the best riding lawn mower for you.
  • Zero-Turn Mowers – These are the professional-grade mowers. They turn on a dime so even a small space is easy to maneuver. Zero-turns have the widest decks and provide the fastest cutting time on the market, and they are usually the best riding lawn mower for those going into business for themselves or for people who own large plots of land. They are expensive, but those who use them swear by them.

3. What Size Riding Lawn Mower Should I Buy?

That all depends on your wants and needs as the person who is mowing your lawn. If you have a small, flat yard, then a standard 32-inch or 36-inch deck will do you just fine. If you have a large yard or you need the versatility of a tractor, then those will be the best riding lawn mowers for you. Your best bet is to see them in person, but our list here can help narrow down the features and benefits for you before you make your decision.

4. Why Type of Fuel Does a Riding Lawn Mower Take?

Most of the best riding lawn mower for the money run on gasoline. There is no need to add the 2-stroke oil into the mix. Pour gas into the tank like you would a car and get to work. Some newer models, like the Raven MPV7100 on this list, are hybrids, so they do have batteries being charged by the engine. In some areas, fully electric mowers have even cropped up, but they did not make the best riding lawn mowers list.

Anyone who is familiar with lawn maintenance will recognize the Husqvarna brand. They are known for quality craftsmanship spanning back all the way to the 17th century. Theirs is the best riding lawn mower, in our opinion, beating out the likes of John Deere and Troy Built for those seeking a tractor that can do a solid job of mowing as well as offering towing capabilities. This 18.5 hp variable transmission tractor with a 13-inch deck is our top choice for those who want quality and performance on a budget. This mower is built with air induction technology that makes for a consistent cut time and time again by keeping the air moving within the deck. This feature alone could make this the best riding lawn mower available because it provides more efficient coverage over extended time periods. The fast CVT auto transmission is power efficient and requires little effort or maintenance. The build size of this mower also makes it perfect for traversing smaller landscapes with uneven terrain.

Features

We couldn’t build a best riding lawn mower list without including perhaps the most famous tractor brand in the U.S.—John Deere. They are known for making your purchase easy and building tractors and mowers that require little maintenance. This 24 hp, V-twin model is no different. The ELS stands for extended-life series, meaning that the engine has enough torque and power for heavy-duty jobs like mulching, while still handling smoothly when mowing and bagging. The V-twin cylinder provides just the right torque and lower vibration, as well as lowering the decibels and improving sound quality. The throttle will never get stuck in the choke position due to a spring-return feature, and the cylinders are made of cast-iron, meaning they will last quite a long time.Let’s not forget about that hydrostatic transmission. This offers greater power and acceleration while keeping things compact. The response and maneuverability are quicker than belt or gear-driven mowers, making it easier to change speed and direction. Cruise control allows you to sit back and enjoy the ride without having to wear out your ankles on those larger jobs. You will also come to appreciate the added lumbar support in the seat and the deluxe steering wheel for added comfort. The front bumper on this model is not only stylish but also helps protect the mower during those heavy-duty jobs.

Toucan City Gas Can with Safety Goggles and John Deere E160 48 in. 24...

Our only real complaints with this mower are the lack of warranty information available before purchase and the mower’s cost. It deserves to be on the top of the list for the best riding lawn mowers on the market, but the price will definitely put it out of many budgets. You get a lot of extramower for the money, however. This is a bigger mower than the Husqvarna YTA18542, and it packs a lot of power. This serves to make this John Deere mower great for heavy jobs in a wider landscape. If you can afford it, this E160 model is built to perform and built to last. There is a reason John Deere is so well known, and this model did not disappoint.

Warranty

Our biggest concern with John Deere is the warranty. We’re sure it’s fantastic, but information on the warranty is only available through the dealer and when you register your product. Because we did not purchase this model, we cannot offer exact warranty information at this time. If you are considering a John Deere E160, have your dealer lay out your warranty before you buy.

Pros

  • ELS engine is built for longer life
  • V-twin engine offers more torque and power
  • Lumbar support in the seat is very comfortable
  • Deluxe steering wheel makes for easier steering

Cons

  • Hefty price tag
  • Manual transmission
  • Lack of transparency about warranty information

Troy-Bilt 30-Inch Neighborhood Riding Lawn Mower
  • This neighborhood mower is ideal for standard land owners with a medium sized landscape and relatively even terrain
  • Powerful OHV Troy-Bilt Engine with top forward speeds of 4.25 MPH and a 6-speed transmission
  • Manual power take-off for fast and easy blade engagement

Troy-Bilt has been around for over 80 years in the home gardening world. They began with tillers back in the day, but they have since expanded to include mowers, pressure washers, and generators, and they are now one of the best-known names in the industry. It’s no wonder this little mower of theirs has ended up on our list of the best riding lawn mowers on the market. The 382cc is Troy-Bilt’s rear engine, 30-inch Neighborhood Riding Lawn Mower. It is built for relatively flat yards and provides an easy to operate experience, making it a great replacement for the traditional walk-behind push mower. This lawn mower has more than enough power to cut even thick patches of grass and comes with a 6-speed transmission, making it capable of reaching nearly 5 miles per hour.

Troy-Bilt 30-Inch Neighborhood Riding Lawn Mower

The 30” deck may not be quite as impressive as the John Deere model, but the smaller turning radius and wider wheelbase make this mower perfect for what it was designed to do—mow a small to medium sized flat grassy space.Because of the Troy-Bilt model’s smaller size, it is easy to store in a garage or shed without taking up too much space. The ergonomic designs for this mower makes it a great option as well. The steering wheel is attached to an adjustable-height column, providing a much more comfortable ride that is guaranteed to cause less fatigue and reduce strain.

Warranty

Troy-Bilt offers a 2-year limited warranty on this 382cc riding lawn mower.

Pros

  • Smaller turning radius makes this model ideal for small, flat yards
  • Wider wheelbase means a smoother, more stable ride

  • Slow

Husqvarna GTH52XLS

Husqvarna YTA24V48 24V Fast Continuously Variable Transmission Pedal...
  • FAST auto transmission for a maintenance free operation
  • Features choke less start, charge port and electric clutch
  • Air Induction mowing technology improves airflow within the deck, ensuring a consistent cut every time

Features

This Husqvarna answers the challenge made by the John Deere E160. It’s big, it’s powerful, and it’s orange! We had a debate over which one was better, and it really did come down to customer reviews. The John Deere model was rated slightly higher overall because it was big, but not too big. For our money, however, this Husky has it all, especially if you have acreage to mow and have lots of stuff to tow. So, let’s get down to it and see why we loved this tractor so much.First of all, the automatic transmission on these Husqvarnas is a wonderful feature. Some folks say that the automatics will have more issues down the road, but we just don’t see it. Automatic cars last just as long as manuals after all. The same, we believe, should go for a tractor. This model is about as ergonomic as it gets with its armrests and high back seat. It even has a cupholder and engaging the cutting blades is as simple as pulling a switch. It is a smooth ride, and it is easy to operate, and those things alone should be enough to at least put it side by side to the John Deere model. And we haven’t even taken a look at the power!

Husqvarna YTA24V48 24V Fast Continuously Variable Transmission Pedal...

Like the John Deere E160, this Husqvarna has a V-twin 24 hp engine with hydrostatic transmission. Sound familiar? Exactly the same as the E160, you are correct. This mower has a wider deck, however, it’s 52 inches compared to the JD’s 48. All that power from the engine and transmission mean taking hills are no problem, just like hauling a stack of lumber or brush is no problem. You can get this baby up to almost 8 miles per hour while in the middle of your mow, so taking care of the biggest jobs is no problem at all.The only downside is that it may actually be too big! On the most uneven ground, it may dig in and leave a trail. But no one’s looking in that ditch, anyway!

Warranty

Husqvarna provides a standard 2-year limited warranty for all of their tractors. Customers have the option of extending this warranty for a year with the additional purchase of Husqvarna brand oil.

Pros

  • Big and powerful—perfect for acreage
  • Very comfortable
  • As much power as the John
  • Deere for less money

Cons

  • May be too big for most yards—size may make storage difficult.
  • Wide deck may cut in on uneven ground
  • While less than the John Deere, this model may be out of budget for many

Poulan Pro PP155H42

Poulan Pro 592865301 42/46 Combo Bagger
  • Fits: Poulan Pro, Husqvarna, Craftsman, Jonsered, Snapper and Ariens Tractors
  • 2 bin bagger with mesh bags can be attached to 42" and 46" stamped riding mower decks
  • New upper Chute is designed for a 50% better bag fill, with 6 bushel capacity and full bagger indicator

Features

Let’s get away from the beast that is the Husqvarna and look at this Poulan Pro PP155h42. There is a reason we put it on the list of best riding lawn mowers, and it is not just so we could introduce you to a brand you may be unfamiliar with. The Poulan brand comes to us from Louisiana, originally, back in the 1950s when they became known for their fast and powerful one-man chainsaws. They began making lawn mowers in the 1980s and haven’t looked back since. They may not be as well known as Husqvarna or John Deere, and even Troy-Bilt may have an edge for recognizability, but the PP155H42 has quite a lot to offer for a medium-large size lawn mower.A Hydrostatic transmission powered by a 15.5 hp engine requires no stopping to change speed or direction. The reinforced deck is ventilated, helping to keep the air moving and minimize clogging. The air filter is designed to be easy to clean and to run cool, providing more power just when you need it. The floating deck gives you that perfectly even cut no matter the bumps in the terrain.

Poulan Pro 592865301 42/46 Combo Bagger

There are some big strengths to this mower. Turf-saver wheels are designed to keep the grass where it belongs. It is extremely easy to use, and steering is just as easy. It has a narrow 18-inch turning radius, so going around trees is no problem at all. Key starting the mower could not be simpler as well. A nice option with this mower is that you have 6 cutting height options instead of the usual 4, so if you’re especially picky about getting your grass to an exact cut-but-not-too-cut look, this is the model for you.The downsides for this Poulan Pro model stem from its trying to provide too much at a lower price point. It is slightly too large for small size yards, but not powerful enough for the larger tracts it yearns to mow. If you have the space to store it, we call it a solid B+ for medium size spaces with room to maneuver.

Warranty

Poulan Pro lawn mowers come with a standard 2-year limited warranty.

Pros

  • Adjustable floating deck offers more cutting height options
  • Narrow turning radius for such a wide deck
  • Turf-saver wheels keep the lawn from showing tracks

Cons

  • Built for a specific medium size lawn—limits versatility
  • Compact body and wide cutting deck make limit storage options

Raven MPV7100

Features

Currently unavailable.

If you have ever found yourself shopping at Lowes for their best riding lawn mowers, you may have stumbled into a Raven and wondered who parked this ATV here? This hybrid is a hybrid. It has the look of an ATV and the functionality of a mower while also providing an electric-hybrid drive. This eco-friendly mower operates at 7100 watts while it only uses 6500. That’s 500 extra wattage for accessories and added towing capabilities, making this a very versatile and fun mowing experience. Functionality and a thrill ride, you say? Why is this not higher on the list? This hybrid mower has a lot going for it, so let’s start there. The hybrid drive train cuts down on fuel consumption by quite a lot. Whereas most tractors this size use about a gallon of fuel per hour, the Raven takes twice the time to burn that much. The engine is also much quieter than the standard tractor. It is still utilizing the engine, but only to charge the batteries and electrical components, keeping the noise level in check.Should you decide to mow your lawn at night, you will probably still wake up your neighbors, but maybe not. Try it out and let us know! Another great feature of the Raven is the balance, making turning at the higher speeds easy and safe. Now for the downsides. Because it is a hybrid, there are batteries to worry about. You may end up spending all that money you saved on fuel to replace the batteries in this machine down the road. In the end, you may end up just wanting to replace the mower altogether. The seat is not ergonomically designed, either. Sitting at 90 degrees, the back of this thing seems designed to get you to push the speed to the max just to get the chore over and done with.

We would not recommend this mower for large jobs. Another thing to ask yourself is how much can that extra 500 watts of electricity really tow? The mulching capabilities alone have been reported as not that great, which leaves us inclined to believe that this mower is built for mowing a medium-sized yard, and that is about it.Still, it made it to this list. Why? Because it’s fun! There is no speed limiter on this ride, so you can actually go pretty fast. It does a decent job of mowing, too, so as long as you are not trying to do anything too strenuous with it, it should be a great mower for a few years. The price is a little scary when compared to what you get for your money with other brands (looking at you Husqvarna), but if you are the sort of person who likes the latest and greatest in hybrid technology, then this is the mower for you.

Warranty

The Raven comes with a 3-year limited warranty on the MPV7100.

Pros

  • Hyrbid technology saves on fuel cost
  • Electric components make for quieter mow
  • Fast (and fun!)

Cons

  • Limited use—feels more like a toy than a tool
  • Longevity of batteries is in question—replacement cost may negate fuel savings
  • Not powerful enough to mulch, which leads us to believe that its towing capabilities may be lacking

Cub Cadet XT1 Enduro 18HP

Features

Cub Cadet was a classic brand of tractors in the 1960s and 1970s. Built to last, you can still find some of those old models in use today. The updated Cub Cadet line still has that classic shape to the body (not to mention that bright, bright yellow) but their newest models offer some of the best features available for a lawn tractor in its price range. This 18 hp V-twin engine packs high performance while using up to 25% less fuel. The hydrostatic transmission offers plenty of torque, and the mowing deck is plenty wide for medium to large cutting jobs. Plenty of features make this feel like a more expensive model. LED lights are nice and bright for when the workday starts early or runs late. Cruise control means setting the mower in motion so that all you have to do is steer.

Cub Cadet XT1 Enduro Series Kohler Hydrostatic Gas Front-Engine Riding...

There are some downsides to this tractor, such as the lower tow capacity and non-metal hood, but these only serve to lower the price point on this model. All in all, we were happy to see this brand making a comeback with a mower that has solid potential to turn an eye in a crowded market.

Warranty

Cub Cadet offers a limited warranty of up to 36 months on its tractor models. Check with the dealer for more details.

Pros

  • Mows in forward and reverse
  • Wide cutting path
  • Snowblower compatible attachment
  • Bluetooth technology for easy diagnosis and repair

Cons

  • Not able to tow heavy loads
  • Engine block is large, obscuring forward view
  • Hood is not metal

Swisher ZTR2766BS

Swisher ZTR2766BS Response 27 HP 66-Inch B&S ZTR Mower
  • 27hp Briggs & Stratton engine
  • 66" 11-gauge fabricated cutting deck
  • Hydro Gear 2800 transmissions/Ogura clutch

Features

The Swisher ZTR2766BS is the only professional grade zero-turn mower on our list of best riding lawn mowers. Zero-turns are big, heavy, powerful beasts built for cutting acre after acre without taking days or weeks to complete. This is why nearly every single lawn maintenance professional ends up buying one. Why did we put this on the list? Well, because it is one of the coolest mowers we had the pleasure of running in to, and we did not want to pass up the chance of taking it for a spin.First, the engine is a 27 hp Brigg & Stratton and built for reliability. This is the same brand used in a number of the mowers we reviewed. These engines are designed to run more quietly and last longer with only routine maintenance. This baby has a 66-inch cutting deck which can take care of a quarter-acre lot in 20 minutes or a big plot of land in only a couple of hours. This is one of the widest cutting decks available that offers three gator blades and mulching capabilities (we said it was a beast).

Swisher ZTR2766BS Response 27 HP 66-Inch B&S ZTR Mower

The Hydro Gear 2800 transmission is of the highest quality. It provides precise, smooth, zero-turn control, and it won’t leak like some of the less expensive zero-turns on the market. This mower is fast, durable, and easy to use.

Warranty

Swisher offers a 3-year warranty on this zero-turn model.

Pros

  • Powerful
  • Huge cutting deck
  • Easy to use

Cons

  • It’s expensive
  • It’s huge

Poulan Pro 960420174

Poulan Pro 592865301 42/46 Combo Bagger
  • Fits: Poulan Pro, Husqvarna, Craftsman, Jonsered, Snapper and Ariens Tractors
  • 2 bin bagger with mesh bags can be attached to 42" and 46" stamped riding mower decks
  • New upper Chute is designed for a 50% better bag fill, with 6 bushel capacity and full bagger indicator

Features

We liked the Poulan Pro PP155H42 so much, we decided to add its big brother to the list of best riding lawn mowers. This beefy mower is what the other mower always wanted to be, and it stacks up fairly well to the Husqvarna in capability and price. The 24 hp V-twin engine is powerful and packs quite a bit of torque. It can mow a wide swath of land quickly, and the automatic transmission means you won’t have to gear up to get going. We won’t spend a lot of time on this bad boy because you already know what Poulan Pro is capable of. They do not disappoint with this powerful model and even include a 10-year warranty for the cutting deck.

Poulan Pro 592865301 42/46 Combo Bagger

Our only concerns here are the small gas tank, smaller wheels, and fast reverse speeds. For such a big mower, you would expect to see it carry enough gas to get through a big job, but at only 2.5 gallons, you will probably need to stop to fill up if you have a lot of mowing or towing to do. The smaller wheels are a concern for softer ground as they may put ruts in the lawn with the extra weight of this beast. The fast reverse speed we could deal with, but it’s nice to have the option of precision as your back up, especially in tight spaces (not that you’ll be cutting into tight spaces with a 54-inch deck).

Warranty

Poulan Pro lawn mowers come with a standard 2-year limited warranty.

Pros

  • Automatic transmission
  • Powerful engine
  • Large cutting deck

Cons

  • Small gas tank for size
  • Small wheels mean this model may dig in a bit
  • No slow reverse speed

The Verdict on the Best Riding Lawn Mower for the Money

Our verdict is that the best riding lawn mower for the money is the Husqvarna YTA18542. It’s the perfect size for any size lawn, even the medium-large. It has plenty of power and can keep going and going without needing to stop. The ergonomic design makes it a pleasure to sit in, and the automatic transmission makes it a pleasure to drive. With available accessories like towing kits, it is the most versatile mower that we reviewed. For larger yards, the Husqvarna GTH52XLS, John Deere E160, or Poulan Pro 960420174 are all great options. Again, we like the Husqvarna model for its supreme comfort and usability. The John Deere is, of course, a powerful machine. You can never go wrong with a Deere, but their warranties have gotten mysterious over the years, and we find that a little worrisome. Previous experience with the company tells us it’s nothing to worry about, but this is why we couldn’t rate it higher. The Poulan Pro is a good machine, but it does lack a lot of features in comparison for a similar price point. If you want a basic mower, then the Troy-Bilt is the best riding lawn mower for you. The 382cc model is perfect for smaller, relatively flat lawns. The Troy-Bilt will not offer the versatility of a tractor, but it will get the job done well and take less space to store. The engine is also great on gasoline and it is the lowest price point, making this a great option for the budget-conscious.Of course, if fun is what you’re after, then the Raven MPV7100 is your best bet. It isn’t a bad mower, and while the tractor capabilities may be hampered by its lack of power, it is fun to ride. It cannot decide whether it is an ATV or a functional garden tool. This is also the best riding lawn mower if you are really into technology as it is the only hybrid mower on the list.Professionals will love the Swisher ZTR2766BS. It has one of the widest decks on the market with one of the most powerful engine/transmission combos. There is no job too big for this beast. While it is the most expensive mower we reviewed, for someone who makes a living with this tool, it is well worth the cost.In the end, the best riding lawn mower is up to you. Consider the size of your yard as well as the overall capabilities that you need before making your purchase. And remember, just because you have money to spend does not mean that you have to spend all of it. There were more expensive mowers on the market in the same classes as the ones we chose, but they did not make the list of best riding lawn mowers because they were not up to our standards. You must decide what your standards are before you make your purchase. You cannot go wrong with any of these on our best riding lawn mower for the money list.
